gift of tech appeal

This Christmas, we're asking members of the public to support our mission by sponsoring a laptop and providing essential digital access to young people and adults in need across the county.

The Gift of Tech appeal addresses the critical need for digital inclusion by providing laptops to those that need them most in the community but who are currently digitally excluded. Having access to a laptop enables people to better manage finances, apply for jobs, attend school, and maintain social connections. Things that many of us take for granted.

The Gift of Tech

One device recipient, referred through the Wiltshire Centre for Independent Living, told us about their experience:

“Being registered as partially sighted at the age of 23 was not what I thought was on the cards for me as I was living a full and fun life and had big plans for my future.

Two years down the line and after having time to adjust to a different way of living, I am determined to make the most of life but was struggling due to a shortage of money as I had just left university and was trying to find employment.

My Community Connector saw how I was applying for jobs using only my smart phone as I didn’t have a laptop. I was pleasantly surprised when she told me that she would be picking up a laptop [from Wiltshire Digital Drive] the following week.

Not even a month after this, I now have a job and am able to communicate with friends and family so much easier than before.

I can’t thank Wiltshire Digital Drive enough for, what to me, is a lifeline and the means to move mountains.”

To date, WDD’s small team has distributed over 3,400 devices free of charge to adults, children and young people across Wiltshire and neighbouring counties.

Why now?

We see every day how a single laptop can transform someone's future. By sponsoring a laptop this Christmas, supporters will be opening doors and creating opportunities for someone less fortunate than themselves. I appreciate how tough things are for everyone right now, but without support I worry that we won’t be able to continue our work in the future. I hope people can get behind us."

The Gift of Tech appeal aims to raise £25,000 and will allow us to refurbish and redistribute 550 laptops in 2025 across the region. For just £45, donors can sponsor the refurbishment of one laptop and make a direct impact on someone's life. The crowdfunder is being match funded by the Aviva Community fund with rewards available to supporters who can give more.

People should visit: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/the-gift-of-tech to donate.
